The 6th Annual Scholarship & Awards Gala, held at the Stamford Sheraton on March 3rd, was truly an amazing evening. This year’s theme, “Mirrored Reflections” is a challenge to each of us to look in the mirror. Is the person looking back someone that is making a difference, impacting lives and challenging the status quo? The challenge is for each of us to decide this year that we are going to raise the bar on how we serve others. There are a variety of ways to do that, and getting involved with the WGC chapter is one fantastic way!
The WGC awarded $27,000 in scholarships to deserving students in the Westchester and Connecticut communities. The Leaders of Tomorrow Students showcased their talents and how LOT has made a difference in their lives.
The evening included a Silent Auction and concluded with a night of dancing.

On February 4, the WGC Leadership team kicked off the new year with a happy hour at Butterfield 8 in Stamford, CT. This was a chance for the newly elected leadership team to come together to network, discuss ideas for the year and get to know each other in a relaxed and social environment. Butterfield 8 sponsored the happy hour as a thank you for using their venue for our 2011 Holiday Party.
The team started the night off in the bar area, chatting about our personal and professional lives and then we moved to the dining room to finish off the evening with some appetizers, drinks and conversation about how to position the chapter to ensure we exceed our goals and objectives and grow our membership and partnerships with the Fairfield and Westchester Counties professional community. The team meets monthly and strategizes in structured Leadership Team meetings, but this was a way to kick off the year getting to know each other and discussing our thoughts about the chapter and how our individual contributions will benefit the whole.

On January 31st, the WGC partnered with Monroe College – King Graduate School of Business to host a phenomenal event featuring author of Expect To Win, Carla Harris. Over 50 students, members and faculty were in attendance to enjoy Carla’s “pearls of wisdom”.
Carla shared her keys to success as an African American woman working on Wall Street for over 20 years and rising to Managing Director at Morgan Stanley. Carla encouraged all to continue the pursuit of excellence through education, mentorship, community and volunteerism – which happens to be many of the membership benefits of the NBMBAA WGC Chapter.
The evening concluded with an intimate opportunity for questions and answers with our esteemed author of which included Carla singing one of her great gospel songs. We can’t thank Carla enough for taking time out of her busy schedule to share her time, expertise and winning spirit! Also, special thanks to Dr. Harris and the Monroe College team for their continued support and coordination of the event.

On February 17th, the WGC welcomed a new corporate partner, Octagon, at Bank Street Events in Stamford, CT. Octagon is the world’s largest sponsorship consulting practice and a pioneer and leader in athlete and personality representation and management. This was a wonderful opportunity for Octagon to interact in an intimate setting with local and diverse talent in the surrounding areas in order to meet potential candidates for positions that were currently open at Octagon.
Our members and guests got a chance to talk directly with key people and decision makers within the Octagon organization. Our guests found the representatives of the Octagon organization to be very engaging, welcoming and were impressed by the organization’s innovative marketing campaigns and commitment to growth.
Octagon was equally impressed by the diversity and energy of our guests and found the evening to be a success and very informative.

To kick off 2012, the WGC hosted a Speed Networking event on January 19, at the Crowne Plaza in White Plains, NY. George Boyce, the new Membership Chair for the Chapter, was the keynote speaker.
George’s presentation focused on how to effectively network. George revved up the crowd by creating a fun icebreaker exercise similar to Bingo. Participants had an index card with different professions and they had to walk around the room and find someone who had one of the professions on the card. The goal was to force people to strike up a conversation with a stranger in order to find out what they did for a living.
This was a great way for people to introduce themselves and network with new people. George’s presentation was lively and informative and the crowd was able to take away tangible tips that they could use in real life situations. The evening culminated with a presentation by the WGC Leadership Team of the 2012 Strategic Plans for the organization.

Waking up for an average high school student is hard, let alone on winter break to attend college tours. However, on March 23, 2011, a group of the National Black MBA Association LEADERS OF TOMORROW (LOT)students did just this!I, Ny-Aja Boyd, was among these students. As we departed from the parking lot of Norwalk Community College, I pulled out a pen and paper to take notes on my future schools.About thirty minutes later, while walking among the buildings of the University of New Haven, I realized that in just a few years this could be my reality.I would soon have to deal with the challenges, excitement and benefits of being a college freshman.Thankfully, I am part of programs like LOT which has prepared and set me on the right track with college preparation tools and information.
I found the tour of the University of New Havenvery informative. It helped me realize just what kind of college I would plan on attending.See, the University of New Haven is a small college with 35 buildings and a 15:1 student teacher ratio; perfect for a student like me, that needs alone time with her professors.I also thought it was in a perfect area - since this would be my first time away from home and it’s not too far for a weekend visit. The college also had diversity which is good for meeting all types of new people and networking.Overall, I felt this school was a good one to keep on the college list for a potential school or backup.
Upon completing the tour of University of New Haven, we then continued on to Wesleyan College. At this school we were able to experience real college food.I must say, it is not like your mother’s cooking, but you can certainly reach your goal of the freshmen 15!Wesleyan College is a Liberal Arts school, which means that students are welcome to explore outside of their ideal majors.Although I am not sure if this school is the right fit for me yet, many students interested in Wesleyan College would very well be attracted to its 46 majors and its diversity of over 60 countries represented. The tour of Wesleyan College did excite and encourage me to look into other liberal arts schools similar to its structure.
Overall I felt the college tour was a great experience for students like me to be able to look at colleges and see which one they feel they belonged at.Many students are not aware of the college process and what it takes to get there, therefore programs like LOT are able to further enhance student’s leadership skills and prepare them for the next step, college.

Recently we attended the Chapter’s Annual Scholarship Awards Gala.As usual, we heard from a riveting guest speaker and networked with many engaging people. It is always a pleasure to celebrate with chapter members who receive recognition for their hard work and dedication throughout the year.
Being a corporate sponsor of the WGC Chapter has been, and continues to be, a great value for the State Farm Agency Recruiting Department, especially with the chapter’s focus on entrepreneurship. This partnership allows us to introduce NBMBA professionals to what State Farm offers holistically and to our agency opportunity in particular. We know our dollars go to a great cause – to support local youth and upcoming leaders in attaining their collegiate dreams.
What about their dreams after college?Being an entrepreneur can be a risky endeavor in today’s economy, as the cost of supplies, personnel and facilities continue to escalate. The trick is to find a strong backer.
This is where State Farm agency shines as a safe way to launch and own a business. As an independent contractor, you set your own goals, hire your own staff, build your own customer base… but you do it with the support of the largest auto and fire insurance company in the country. It’s the best of both worlds!
“State Farm is always looking for successful people to become agents,” says Agency Recruiter Tamika Pettway.“We need men and women who want to be leaders in their communities with the backing of a premier company and its full array of products to protect the finances of everyday households.”
As a State Farm agent, you are a trusted resource for people seeking financial security and insurance protection for their families. Being a State Farm agent is about more than just hard work; it’s commitment to your policyholders and the community at large. Here’s what we do to get you there:
